A devastating fire in the Makina area of Kibera slums, Nairobi, claimed the lives of at least eight people and left over 20 others with serious injuries on Saturday morning. According to the Kilimani police boss, Patricia Yegon, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. The tragic incident occurred around 5 am when the victims were asleep. Among the fatalities were seven members of the same family and a pregnant woman. Seven survivors, all with severe burns, were admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital. Senior security officials and the area Member of Parliament, Peter Orero, visited the scene to offer support and condolences to the affected families. Orero expressed his sympathies in a statement, noting that a response team had been deployed to provide immediate assistance, including medical care, counseling, and essential relief. The fire, which affected approximately 40 households, was contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade with assistance from community members. The Red Cross also confirmed the incident. Locals reported that the fire occurred behind Kambi along the route to Eagles, leaving the community in deep mourning and loss of property. Among the injured were one man, two women, and three children, all of whom were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Orero assured the residents that the county would implement long-term safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. He also expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and pledged support during this difficult time. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene to provide medical care, counseling, and immediate relief to those affected. The displaced were reportedly camping at local schools and churches. This incident follows another fire in Nairobi County, where five people lost their lives in a fire that occurred early Monday morning in the Mathare B slums. Orero urged the community to stand together in compassion, support, and solidarity during this challenging time.
