A police officer from a specialized unit was apprehended by the public in Mathare slums, Nairobi, on allegations of attempting to rob an M-Pesa agent of cash. The officer, who was not identified, was arrested and disarmed by a mob following an unsuccessful robbery attempt on May 24 at night. According to the M-Pesa agent, the officer had requested to withdraw Sh36,000 and, upon being denied access to the funds, produced a firearm and demanded the cash. However, the agent had not yet processed the withdrawal request, leading the officer to brandish a Ceska pistol. The agent raised an alarm, prompting local residents to intervene, resulting in the officer’s escape. The mob pursued him until he surrendered and admitted to being a police officer. The mob disarmed him of his weapon, which contained eight bullets, and handed him over to the authorities. The incident is currently under investigation by the police, who are seeking to determine how the officer left his post in Mandera and allegedly committed the crime in Nairobi. Cases of police involvement in criminal activities have been reported, with the police force implementing internal mechanisms to address such occurrences. The police stated that all reported cases are being handled or have been resolved. In some instances, officers have been found to be dealing with personal trauma, including the effects of poor working conditions and exposure to distressing situations. Separately, two police officers were injured in Kericho County when they fell from a motorcycle while transporting a defilement suspect to the station. One officer sustained an injury to the hand, while the other, a female officer, had injuries to her hand knuckles. Both officers were treated and discharged from a local clinic.
