A tragic incident occurred at Kenya Utalii College in Nairobi last week when a first-year student, identified as Collins Kiprotich, was discovered deceased in one of the campus hostels. The exact cause of his death remains under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have been a suicide. The discovery of Kiprotich’s body, which was found hanging in a third-floor room, sparked outrage among students who claimed he had been harassed by security guards in the days leading up to his death. According to eyewitnesses, Kiprotich had been involved in an altercation with security personnel at the college’s main gate, and a video of the incident was reportedly circulating on WhatsApp groups. Despite concerns raised by students about Kiprotich’s whereabouts, the college administration reportedly failed to take action. The administration maintains that they did reach out to Kiprotich’s family to address the issue. The circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s death are still unclear, but his decomposing body was found hanging on a brown belt tied to a wardrobe hanger in a room that had been locked from the inside. The room’s foul odor had prompted officials to investigate, leading to the discovery of the body. The news of Kiprotich’s death sparked protests from students, who marched out of the campus to demand justice. The demonstration caused heavy traffic gridlock on Thika Road as police were deployed to contain the situation. Meanwhile, in other parts of the country, there were reports of three other suspected suicides. In Naivasha, David Ruara Kimani was found dead in his home in Mararo village, having hanged himself using a nylon sport shoe lace on a clothesline metal post. In Rhonda, Nakuru, James Waititu alias Jimmy was discovered dead in his compound, with his body dangling from a tree tied with a belt on a jacket at the sewage area. In Kehancha, Migori County, Daniel Wegesa, 24, was found dead after ingesting poison. In all cases, the bodies were moved to the mortuary for autopsy and investigations. This tragic series of events serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing student concerns promptly and compassionately.
