Two young children, aged four and three, were tragically found deceased in their home in Bondeni village, Ituka Sub-location, Makueni County, following suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident occurred on April 25. Upon discovery, residents reported seeing smoke emanating from the children’s room. Upon gaining entry, they found the door locked from the outside and the lifeless bodies of the two children inside, lying on a mattress facing each other and covered with a blanket. The mother of the children was nowhere to be found. The cause of the carbon monoxide leak is believed to have originated from a burning jiko, which was discovered in the room. Police are currently investigating the scene and are eager to speak with the children’s mother to gather more information about the incident. The bodies have been transported to Makueni Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. Carbon monoxide poisoning, often referred to as the ‘silent killer,’ occurs when the odorless, colorless gases produced during the burning of wood or charcoal mix with the blood and disrupt oxygen circulation in the body. When inhaled, carbon monoxide enters the bloodstream, binds to the hemoglobin in red blood cells, and forms carboxyhemoglobin, preventing the blood from transporting oxygen effectively. This dangerous condition is a common occurrence in the country, with ongoing efforts to discourage the use of jikos in poorly ventilated areas. In a separate incident, the body of a woman was discovered floating in Ondoche River in Nyatike, Migori County, with signs of suspected drowning. The partially decomposed body was retrieved and transported to Migori Referral Hospital mortuary for identification and postmortem examination.
