President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok to find a buyer in the US by an additional 90 days. The video-sharing app, which faces national security concerns due to its Chinese ownership, has been given more time to finalize a sale agreement. The US government passed a law last year that required TikTok to be banned unless sold by its parent company, ByteDance. Lawmakers expressed concerns over the potential risk to national security, a claim TikTok denies. Trump, who pledged to save TikTok during his campaign, signed an executive order on Thursday extending the deadline for enforcing the law. In a statement, TikTok expressed gratitude for Trump’s support and continued efforts to work with the Vice President’s Office. The sale of TikTok in the US must now be completed by September 17, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social. The further delay is a predictable development in the ongoing process of securing a buyer for TikTok. The Chinese authorities are expected to approve any sale or partial sale of the app by ByteDance. The law was enacted due to fears that TikTok or ByteDance could be compelled to share user data with the Chinese government. Trump attempted to force a sale of TikTok to an American buyer in 2020 but later expressed support for the platform, citing its role in helping him win the 2024 presidential election. The law was set to take effect on January 19, 2021, but TikTok challenged its constitutionality in the courts. The Supreme Court upheld the law just before it was due to take effect. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman Mark Warner, a Democrat, criticized Trump’s decision to extend the deadline. “Once again, the Trump administration is flouting the law and ignoring its own national security findings about the risks posed by a PRC-controlled TikTok,” Warner said in a statement. “An executive order cannot sidestep the law, but that’s exactly what the president is trying to do.”
