On Tuesday, former Chief Justice David Maraga strongly condemned the shooting of Boniface Kariuki, a mask vendor, by a police officer at close range during protests in Nairobi. The incident occurred when Kariuki was selling masks to protesters, and one officer responded by firing at him. Maraga described the officers’ actions as inhumane. Kariuki was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital following the shooting and underwent surgery that night. His condition was not disclosed on Wednesday. Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director General for Health, confirmed the surgery and expressed concern over the escalating violence during the protests. The protests, which took place in the Nairobi Central Business District, were linked to growing calls for accountability following the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody. Maraga criticized the use of “rogue operatives” and goons by law enforcement, resulting in at least 22 reported casualties from shootings and violent attacks across the country. Despite the violence, Maraga commended the youth of Kenya for their unwavering pursuit of justice and accountability. He encouraged them, stating that their efforts and sacrifices would not be in vain and that the future of the country depended on their hands. The police officer responsible for the shooting, identified as Masinde Barasa of QRU, was arrested ahead of planned arraignment. The shooting occurred outside Imenti House during the protests. Michael Muchiri, the police spokesman, acknowledged the shooting incident and ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment of the involved officer. He also condemned the presence of armed goons during the protests and initiated investigations to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly. The victim was taken to the hospital and was receiving medical attention. Email your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel.
